Tourism and Dude Ranching in Wyoming: Triangle X Ranch Case Study
By Carrie Martin
Introduction
Tourism dollars are large addition to Wyoming’s economy today just as they have been contributing for the past hundred years. Travelers on the Oregon, California and Mormon trails crossed the state with other destinations in mind, only stopping to glimpse at the beauty the state has to offer. When cattle price dropped below profit levels in the 1920’s ranchers started to entertain wealthy easterners by providing a real experience, authentic in the mind of the tourist, of the western lifestyle and culture of a working cattle and horse ranch. The Triangle X Ranch, located in Moose Wyoming today, is a wonderful example of such a venture. Established in the mid-1920’s as a working “dude” ranch Triangle X Ranch was outfitted with cattle horses and cabins to cater to rugged needs of guest. The history of the development of “Dude Ranches” in Wyoming is a wonderful example of entrepreneurship in a downward spiraling of economic trend that was occurring in the state and the nation during the 1920’s and 30’s.
