Box Number, Folder Number, University of Wyoming Archives, American Heritage Center, University of Wyoming. http://www.uwyo.edu/ahc/inventories/548005.htmThe UW College of Agriculture began study and research in sheep and wool 1907 after passage of the Adams Act, which provided funding of $5000 per year for land-grant universities in sheep and wool studies. UW purchased the Wyoming Territorial Prison in 1907 and remodeled it for livestock work, including the housing of its Rambouillet sheep flock. The college established the Animal Husbandry department in 1911, which was subsequently renamed Animal Production in 1934, the Animal Science Division in 1961, and the Animal Science Department in 1986. The Wool Department was established in 1913 and conducted research, training, and experiments on sheep and wool in cooperation with the Agricultural Experiment Station before being merged with the Animal Science department in 1955.
The collection contains photographs, newsclipping, scrapbooks and subject files on the evolution of the Wyoming wool industry as well as tests preformed from around the United States and Australia. The collection also contains correspondences with wool buyers form around the globe as well as correspondence with Robert Burns and his travels in the Middle East and China. Furthermore, the collection contains and abundance of photos, prints, negatives, slides and stamps of sheep and the wool business.
The collection has been organized into four series:
Series I. Office Records, 1941-1982. 2.7 cubic ft. (6 boxes). Contains subject files on wool and sheep research and marketing; correspondence with buyers, research scientists, and government officials; and research project notes.
Series II. Photographs, Negatives and Slides, 1880-1968. 1.8 cubic ft. (4 boxes). Contains prints, negatives and slides of sheep, classrooms, wool research, and Burns' travel overseas.
Series III. Scrapbooks and Photograph Albums, 1874-1971. 2.38 cubic ft. (3 boxes). Contains newsclippings and photographs on the sheep and wool industries, research at the University of Wyoming, and a scrapbook kept by Robert Burns on materials and correspondence with William Thomson Ritch of the American Wool Improvement Association
Series IV. Oversize, 1958-1971. .87 cubic ft. (1 box). Contains marketing maps and datasheets.
