Spring 1998 Heritage Highlights
Photo Archivist, Dan Davis, received his M.A. in history from the University of Wyoming in December. AHC director, Mike Devine, was elected vice president of the National Council for Public History. The NCPH is a national organization of professionals working in museums, historical agencies, and university faculty working to prepare students for careers outside academe. Assistant Director, Rick Ewig, served as a humanities scholar on a grant given to the Wyoming Territorial Prison in Laramie. Rare Books Curator, Anne Marie Lane, was recently elected to the Wyoming Center for the Book board and published a book review about Pablo Picasso, 1881-1973 in the Library Journal. |

In March Lori Olson presented a slide lecture on mountain man Richard "Beaver Dick" Leigh, a trapper who lived in the Wyoming-Idaho territory of the Tetons from the 1850s to the 1890s, at the Rockpile Museum, Gillette, Wyoming. Leighs original diaries and correspondence are housed by the Center. Mark Shelstad, Cataloging Archivist, was the recipient of the 1998 Wyoming State Archives Award of Excellence for developing and promoting records and information management for the University of Wyoming. Archives Specialist, Ginny Kilander, was recently hired to arrange and describe collections having to do with conservation and environmental history. Ginny previously worked in the AHC Toppan Rare Books Library and is completing an M.A. in American Studies at UW. Digitization Specialist, Linda Marston, recently joined the IAEG staff. Linda earned an MS in Physical Geography from Oregon State University and teaches part time for the UW Department of Geography and Recreation. The American Heritage Center will have a number of interns this summer. Kim Mainardis, a graduate student in the American Studies program at the University of Wyoming, will be processing the papers of the Wyoming Hereford Ranch, which have recently been loaned to the Center. Kristen Knutson, also a graduate student in the American Studies program, will be preparing a booklet about the AHCs Rentschler Room and preparing an exhibit about cowboy cartoonists which will be on display in the UW Art Museum during the fall of 1998. Shari Wood, who has worked in the reference area this spring, will be processing the papers of Keith Thomsen.
