4th Grade Class Analyzes Primary Source Documents

On March 27, the fourth grade class from Thayer Elementary School in Laramie visited the American Heritage Center to learn more about Wyoming history. Assistant Director, Rick Ewig, and Reference Archivist, Lori Olson, presented a class to the students using diary entries and photographs documenting life on the Oregon Trail. Students analyzed several different first-hand accounts about the trail and then shared their findings with classmates.

The American Heritage Center encourages the use of primary sources in the 4th grade through college level classrooms. Using letters, diaries, and photographs is an exciting way to learn about the past. If you are interested in bringing a class to the AHC to learn more about primary sources, please contact Lori Olson at 307-766-2563, or lolson@uwyo.edu.
