The Coat Couture Collection: Art to Wear

Introduction to the Exhibit

This online exhibit contains materials from an exhibit on display at the University of Wyoming's Centennial Complex Loggia from May 1 to June 4, 1998. The original exhibit features works created by students in Fiber Arts, a graduate course taught in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Throughout the semester students had the opportunity to learn a variety of textile embellishment techniques, such as fabric painting and three-dimensional manipulations. As a final project for the class, each student was required to create a wearable art jacket containing a lining and incorporating a minimum of three techniques learned in class.

As can be seen from the exhibit, each piece is unique even though all students were exposed to the same concepts. Wearable art is a means of expressing one's individuality through dress. This art form is currently becoming popular in the United States and abroad.
