About the Anaconda Collection

The Anaconda Geological Documents Collection is the scientific product of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's 90-year program of exploration and development work throughout the United States and in 110 foreign countries. It has been described as the largest and most-significant body of economic geological data in the world.

The collection contains over 1.8 million documents, or 54 tons of geological reports; maps; geological and geophysical data; 18,000 local and regional mining and exploration studies; 5,500 reports on specific mining prospects; 10,000 documents containing geological, geochemical, geophysical drilling, assay, and other data; and 56,450 geologic, geochemical, geophysical, claim, and sample-location maps.

The Anaconda Geological Documents Collection was accepted by the University of Wyoming in 1987 on the condition that the collection be self-supporting. State and University funds are not available to offset the many costs of preserving, maintaining, and providing access to the collection. Membership categories have been established to accommodate corporate and professional researchers for various levels of use (Gold, Silver and Bronze Club Members), academic researchers, and government agencies.

The American Heritage Center also holds many other significant collections in the areas of geology, economic geology, mining and mineral prospecting, petroleum geology, and the history of earth science. On-line access to American Heritage Center collections is available through the online catalog.

Access and Contact Information

The Anaconda Geological Documents Collection is indexed on a computer database and is retrievable by searching by country, state, county, project/mine name, commodity, author, or date. Searches tailored to specific inquiries can be developed upon request, and can be transmitted to researchers by mail, fax, or the Internet. The index will be searchable over the Internet in the future.

The Anaconda Collection Reading Room is available to Anaconda Collection Membership holders and is open by appointment only. All information about current and past members is held in confidence within the limits of state law. The reading room can be booked for private use by members who are concerned with the confidentiality of their research.

For more information contact Ginny Kilander, Reference Archivist, by e-mail at papyrus@uwyo.edu, or by phone at 307.766.2553.  A database search request form is now available.
